Departure of Marc Skinner
Manchester United Women have announced that their long-serving head coach, Marc Skinner, will be leaving the club by mutual consent. The 43-year-old has been in charge for five years and led the team to significant achievements, including three consecutive Women's FA Cup finals between 2023 and 2025, with a victory in 2024.
Skinner's departure comes after he expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer strategy. He has repeatedly called for greater investment in the team, particularly through transfers, but this year's summer transfer window saw United focus on developing young players rather than engaging in high-stakes bidding wars typical of some larger Women's Super League clubs.
New Direction and Future Plans
The club is now focusing on building a sustainable team with homegrown players. This strategy aligns with the club’s identity of nurturing youth, as evidenced by increased investments into their academy. However, Skinner was reportedly frustrated seeing other WSL teams outspending United in recent transfers.
A notable example is the sale of French striker Melvine Malard to Chelsea for a club-record fee around £850,000. This move has raised concerns about the club's ambition and sustainability moving forward. Meanwhile, Manchester City Lionesses, who will face United on their opening day in September, have made significant signings including Alexia Putellas and Mapi León.
The club is now working to identify a new head coach and are expected to name his replacement soon.
