Manchester United Women secured a vital 2-1 win over West Ham United in the Women's Super League on Sunday. Goals from Elisabeth Terland and Andrea Medina were enough to claim three points, despite a late Viviane Asseyi penalty for the visitors.
The victory lifts United to ninth in the WSL standings, now on four points from their opening four matches. It marks a second consecutive win for Eva Olid's side, who are beginning to build momentum after a difficult start to the campaign.
Terland opened the scoring early, meeting Aana Sandberg's right-wing corner with a powerful header in the ninth minute. United dominated the first half, with West Ham failing to register a shot on target against goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce. The hosts created several chances, with Constance Picaud-Inconnu in the West Ham goal making good saves to deny Ella Toone and Hanna Lundkvist.
Medina seals the points
Andrea Medina doubled the lead in the 72nd minute with a fine curling strike, having earlier hit the crossbar. West Ham improved after the break and found a consolation goal deep into stoppage time. Viviane Asseyi was fouled in the area and converted the resulting penalty herself.
West Ham head coach Rita Guarino expressed her disappointment after the match. "I'm disappointed for the result," she said. Defender Inès Belloumou added, "I think we played well. We had some opportunities, but they scored theirs."
United's discipline was an issue, with Julia Zigiotti Olme, Sandberg and Maya Le Tissier all receiving yellow cards. Olid made several substitutions to manage the game, introducing Lea Schuller and Rebeca Bernal in the closing stages.
The team now turns its attention to a home fixture against fifth-placed Liverpool on Saturday, 3 October. Fans can see the full upcoming fixtures schedule as United aim to extend their winning run.
