Manchester United Women will compete in the inaugural Subway Players Cup this season, replacing the Women’s League Cup with a fresh format and name. The Red Devils, who finished 4th in the FA WSL last season with 40 points (11W-7D-4L), are eager to claim their second-ever trophy after falling short in the League Cup final to Chelsea.
What’s changing in the tournament?
The Subway Players Cup introduces a Swiss-style league phase, replacing the old group stage. Teams will play a minimum of six games, up from three, with fixtures drawn by region. Clubs in the UEFA Champions League, like Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, will not participate, making United the highest-ranking side in the competition.
Why does this matter for United?
With no Champions League football next season, Marc Skinner’s side can focus on domestic silverware. The new format prioritises player welfare, ensuring more game time for non-internationals. United’s recent form (LDDLW) and +16 goal difference (38 scored, 22 conceded) show they’re capable of challenging for the title.
What’s next for the Red Devils?
The league-phase ties run from September to December, with penalty shootouts deciding drawn games. United’s first fixtures will be announced on 6 August at 12:00 BST. After losing key players like Melvine Malard and Millie Turner, new signings Andrea Medina and Janina Leitzig will be crucial in their push for glory.
